July 2024 Board Meeting Highlights

 

Consent Agenda Items:

  • Logo Design for CIWW: MP Design, from Adel, provided several potential logos for CIWW with key stakeholders recommending one of those designs to the Board.  The Board approved the recommendation, and the new logo (at the top of this communication) will be used on the CIWW website and official correspondence.


  • Trademark Assignment: The trademark "Central Iowa Water Works" (Registration No. 4,430,217) was transferred from Des Moines Water Works to CIWW. CIWW will handle all future maintenance costs.

 

Board Action Items:

  • IPAIT Membership: CIWW’s motion to join the Iowa Public Agency Investment Trust (IPAIT) was approved. This investment option provides flexible investment terms and strong principal stability.


  • PFAS Settlement Claims: The board ratified the early July submissions of PFAS settlement claims by Des Moines Water Works and West Des Moines Water Works. Expected net proceeds, all going to CIWW, exceed $14 million that must be earmarked for addressing PFAS contamination.

 

Committee Recommendations:

  • Executive Committee: The Executive Director position will be posted on 10 professional journals/web sites with applications due by August 29th. Recruitment for the Executive Assistant is underway, with responses due by August 6th.


  • Finance and Audit Committee:

    • PFM Financial Advisory Services: The Board approved an agreement for interim financial advisory services with PFM, capped at $150,000.


    • 2024 Budget: The board approved the interim budget, projected at $2.05 million in resources and $1.63 million in expenditures.


    • Meter-to-Cash Services: The Board approved Des Moines Water Works to handle CIWW’s metering and billing services, with an implementation fee capped at $5,000.


    • Capital Improvement Plan (CIP): The Draft Five-Year CIP, totaling $254.5 million, was reviewed and will be finalized in alignment with the rate model an in conjunction with consideration of the 2025 Budget.

     

Reports:

  • Interim Executive Director Report: The initial CIWW website was previewed and, with several tweaks yet to be made, is set to launch prior to the August board meeting.


  • Producers Report: An update on nitrate levels was provided, and a tour of the Saylorville Water Treatment Plant is scheduled for July 31, 2024.
